Originally the Cheng Kwong Market and operated by Vietnamese immigrants Peter Luu and his son, it is located at 73 Essex Street. It is the first of what becomes a chain of Asian supermarkets. Others open in Allston in 2002, South Bay in Dorchester in 1999, the South End, Quincy and Malden. The original store closes in 2008, and the remaining stores are turned over to Wincent International, a New Jersey chain, in 2011.
